Black Australorps are an absolutely stunning breed with looks, temperament, egg production, being a great heat/cold hardy breed, and are a great beginner breed. Starting with looks, they have a green sheen in their black feathers, and when the sun hits it, it is so mesmerizing. They are a docile and calm breed that loves treats. They can lay anywhere from 4-6 light brown to brown eggs a week. That's 14-24 eggs a month for one chicken, equaling 200-300 eggs a year. They do great during the winter with their heavy bodies, weighing approximately 8 1/2 lbs for the rooster and 6 1/2 lbs for the hens, which helps with the cold winter may bring. They do well in heat but remember to provide shade and water. They are also low maintenance. All these reasons are why they make an excellent beginner breed. They even start laying around 5-6 months.
